Policy update

Policy update for late objections to the accuracy of a notice of service credits; backdating of a registration date; and crediting service.

The Corporation recently reviewed its policy regarding:

  • late objections to the accuracy of a notice of service credits;
  • backdating of a registration date; and
  • crediting service.

We encourage customers to read the policy at the link below. Customers need to be aware that the new policy will take effect from 1 May 2021.

What is the policy about
  • Late objections to the accuracy of a notice of service credits

    The Long Service Corporation (the Corporation) provides workers with notices annually that lists their service credits. A worker can lodge an objection to the accuracy of a notice of service credits within 6 months of receiving the notice. The Corporation can't consider any other objection relating to the accuracy of the notice unless the objection is lodged with the Corporation within 2 years after the date of the work, activity or circumstance to which the objection relates. A late objection may be accepted if the Corporation considers that special circumstances warrant it doing so.

  • Backdating of a registration date and crediting service

    When a worker registers with the Corporation, sometimes they will want service recorded for eligible work that they performed before lodging their registration. However, the Corporation can't backdate registration and add service credits earlier than 2 years before the registration request was made, unless the Corporation is satisfied that special circumstances warrant it doing so.

What is changing in the policy

The review identified some changes to the types of documents that will not be accepted by the Corporation when a worker applies for backdating registration and service credits that will simplify the application process and ensure suitable evidence is provided. Special circumstances that warrant late consideration are explained in the policy and are unchanged.

What documents can be used as 'Suitable Evidence'

The new policy contains a list of approved documents that will help guide customers on what they need to provide to us when they are late to object to their notice of service or apply to have their registration backdated and service credited.

  • From 1 April 2021 to 30 April 2021 (transitional period) customers are encouraged to provide documents from the suitable evidence list within the policy to support their related applications and notices.
  • From 1 May 2021 all applications and notices that the policy applies to will require documentation from the suitable evidence list within the policy. No other documents will be accepted.
