Type of Work Covered

The scheme covers employees and contractors who perform building and construction work in the building and construction industry.

The building and construction industry is the carrying out of construction, reconstruction, renovation, alteration, demolition or maintenance or repairs of or to buildings, etc.

Building and construction work is the carrying out of work for which a rate of pay is fixed by a prescribed award. The awards are listed in the Regulations to the Building and Construction Industry Long Service Payments Act 1986.

The Coverage Index summarises the types of building and construction work covered by the scheme. You should check the Coverage Index to see if the work of your employees is listed. This index is developed from the work classifications of Prescribed Awards specifically referred to by the legislation and its regulations. Work partially covered

Some types of work are only partially covered by the scheme. For further information, see:

Work on Commonwealth land

Work on Commonwealth land is not eligible for service credits under the Building and Construction Industry Long Service Leave (BCI LSL) scheme administered by the Long Service Corporation (LSC) in NSW.

A Commonwealth place includes places the Commonwealth owns. Examples of Commonwealth places in NSW include military bases (Holsworthy Barracks, Williamtown RAAF and Wagga Wagga RAAF), office blocks purchased by the Commonwealth to accommodate employees of Commonwealth Government Departments and Sydney Airport.
