Portable Long Service Leave Scheme

On 1 July 2011 a new portable long service leave scheme for the contract cleaning industry commenced.

The scheme is administered by the Long Service Corporation and is funded by a levy on industry employers. The levy is calculated on a percentage of the ordinary wages of employees and is payable to the Corporation on a quarterly basis. The first employer return lodgement and levy payment was due on 14th October 2011.

The scheme recognises service from 1 July 2011 to the cleaning industry rather than to one individual employer. This allows a worker to work for any number of cleaning industry employers in order to reach an entitlement in this scheme. While the scheme does not recognise service prior to 1 July 2011, workers registered by 31 December 2011 will be recognised as Foundation Members and will be granted a one year bonus service credit with this scheme.

Workers registered on the first quarterly return lodgement will receive a letter shortly advising their worker registration number with the scheme. All workers receiving this registration letter should check that their name, address and contact details shown are correct and advise the Corporation of any errors or missing information.

A worker’s registration number will not change during a worker’s employment in the contract cleaning industry. This number should be provided to any new employers to ensure that a worker’s portable long service record is kept up to date.
